Colnago
Tange Prestige

An Italian racing bicycle built in Japanese steel and fitted with two defining technical strands from the early 1990s: Shimano’s Dura-Ace 7400 series and Campagnolo’s deep-section Shamal wheels.

The Colnago name is Italian, but the tubing decal points to Japan. Tange Prestige was a light, heat-treated tubeset, giving this bicycle a different combination from the Columbus frames most readily associated with Cambiago.

From workshop to international marque

Ernesto Colnago founded the company in Cambiago near Milan. Through professional teams and a close eye for paint, logos and mechanical detail, Colnago became one of the best-known names in Italian cycling.

This bicycle sits between the classic steel racer and the systems thinking of the 1990s. Its frame remains lugged steel, while its gears and wheels show components increasingly developed as complete, coordinated solutions.

From indexed down-tube shifting to STI

Dura-Ace 7400 became Shimano’s decisive professional road group. It began with indexed down-tube shifting and later gained STI, moving the gear control into the brake lever.

The supplied specification refers to both 7401 and 7403, as well as the final generation of indexed down-tube shifters. The levers visible here are integrated. The bicycle is therefore described as a 7400-series build without assigning certainty to every individual model number.

The wheel became a complete product

Campagnolo introduced the Shamal in 1992 as its first complete high-profile wheel. Rim, hub, spoke count and aerodynamic shape were conceived as one system rather than parts selected independently.

The supplied specification identifies the hubs on this bicycle as Campagnolo Record C. Its exact wheel construction should therefore be read as the present build, while the Shamal name and deep-section rims are clearly visible in the photographs.

The basis of this page

The year and specification come from the information supplied with the bicycle, compared with the photographs shown here. The operation of the Dura-Ace family was checked against Shimano service instructions for the 7400 series.

Campagnolo states that the Shamal was introduced in 1992 as the company’s first complete high-profile wheel. Where the supplied component list is internally unclear, the distinction is noted in the text.

The bicycle joins three traditions: Colnago’s Italian frame design, Tange’s Japanese tubing and components from the years when gears and wheels were becoming complete systems.
